Hydroseeding For Erosion Control
Erosion Control is the practice of preventing or controlling wind or water erosion in agriculture, land development and construction sites. Effective erosion controls handle surface runoff and are important techniques in preventing water pollution, soil loss, wildlife habitat loss and human property loss. Hydroseeding is very effective method for controlling erosion. There are several hydroseeding products designed specifically for erosion control.
Wood mulch with Tackifier
This is the standard mulch used in the hydroseeding process. This works well for short term erosion prevention (one to two months) and is usually sufficient for planting new lawns during the growing season on level to moderately sloped areas. Typically it will prevent erosion and hold the hydroseed in place long enough for the grass to become established.
Bonded Fiber Matrix
Bonded Fiber Matrix mulch is a unique class of hydroseeding erosion control product. The term is accepted within the erosion control industry to categorize hydraulically applied products which are designed, tested and proven to match or exceed the performance of erosion control blankets. A bonded fiber matrix is a continuous layer of elongated fiber strands held together by a water-resistant bonding agent. It eliminates direct rain drop impact on soil (it has no holes greater than one millimeter in size), it allows no gaps between the product and the soil and it has a high water-holding capacity. A bonded fiber matrix will not form a water-insensitive crust that can inhibit plant growth, and it will biodegrade completely into materials known beneficial to plant growth. This is a medium term mulch(6 months+) which is ideal for medium to steep slopes. We use a product from Profile called Hydro Blanket. This product can be used in place of erosion control Blankets.
Hydro-Blanket® Bonded Fiber Matrix (BFM) sprays on as mulch, but dries to form a breathable blanket that bonds more completely with the soil, more effectively prevents erosion, and saves time and money compared to erosion control blankets as well as other BFMs.

- Only BFM to combine Thermally Refined® wood fiber and multi-dimensional tackifiers for greater water-holding capacity, more complete germination and faster vegetation establishment
- Proven to control erosion more completely than other BFMs
- Anchors intimately to the soil through proprietary cross-linked, hydro-colloidal tackifiers and activators
- Completely biodegrades and is non-toxic, like all Green Design Engineering™ products
- Compared to erosion control blankets, Hydro-Blanket:
- Faster, safer and easier to apply than rolled blankets
- Eliminates staples and stakes; tenting and drilling
- Eliminates extensive and more costly site preparation
Off Season Hydroseeding
Bonded fiber matrix is ideal for off season hydroseeding. When it is necessary to hydroseed in the winter for erosion control purposes or to satisfy a county or city inspector BFM is the ideal product. This will help hold the hydroseed and soil in place until it gets warm enough for the seed to germinate.
Flexterra
Flexterra provides the ultimate protection for those critical jobs and steep slopes where only the best will do.
Patented Flexterra® High Performance-Flexible Growth Medium™ (HP-FGM™)—proven to surpass all hydraulically applied mulch products and turf establishment blankets:
